Simple: obey the speed limits! Reducing top speeds from 60 MPH to the legal limit of 55 MPH saves on average 10% fuel. My 1996 minivan gets 28 MPG on the highway as a result, who needs a hybrid? Accelerate normally, not jack-rabbit style, and you’ll save plenty in city driving. It’s obvious that gas remains cheap for most though: drive the speed limit for a week and count how many cars you passs versus how many pass you. Until people slow down, it’s clear that there isn’t that much sincere interest, or need, to save gas, which remains cheaper than milk, BTW.

Boy do I agree! I am choosing to take the slower roads instead of I-540, Hwy 264, etc., unless there is a time contraint involved. I coast when possible and accelerate steadily, no gunning the engine. I also do not run my air conditioning, and keep my trips to those that involve as many things as possible, buying gas (gulp), going to the bank, picking up prescriptions and going to the store all in the same trip. When it is possible I am arranging carpool buddies. That is the hardest though.

We had bought a golf cart (from a local business) for our community to save on using gas. We used it to take our kids to school (in the nieghborhood) go to the food store (part of the neighborhood) and visit the pool and neighbors. It was a great idea and everyone was really into it. That’s was until the ROLESVILLE police started harrassing us. The police seen the golf cart PARKED at the pool, proceeded to come into the pool area and address us about the golf cart and the laws. He informed us we would be ticketed if he had seen it on the street, and that there could be jail time involved if we didn’t comply. We had called and asked to speak with the chief for some liency on this issue and all we got was I’ll get back to you. Nothing since, but the police sure have and awlful lot of presence in our neighborhood now, burning up the community paid for gas, looking for electric golf carts. If you really want to save gas money, the local government has got to help out. But that won’t happen, not in ROLESVILLE anyway.
