Carrboro Story

‘Coworking’ Coming To Carrboro-Chapel Hill Telecommuters

Credit: AP Online
CARRBORO, N.C. -

A man from Orange County is going to be the first one to bring "coworking" to North Carolina.

Brian Russell is the man behind "Carrboro Creative Coworking."

"I found there was a big gap between going from sitting in a coffee shop and affording an expensive office," he said. "There needs to be an area in between."

And that's where coworking comes into play. Rooms in a building at 205 Lloyd Street in Carrboro will be filled with furniture, computers, and printers. Patrons will pay a certain amount to use a desk or office. Russell said it provides the perfect environment for people to get their work done.

"It's between a cafe and a library," Russell said. "But it's closer to a library than a cafe."

Russell said the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area is an ideal location for coworking as many don't work out of an office, but still need somewhere to go. The location for the CCC is currently under construction, but Russell said when the doors open, he expects to have a very good turnout from the local community.

"Everyone I've talked to since I started the business has been very supportive and thinks it's a great idea," Russell said.

Bora Zivkovic is a Chapel Hill resident who telecommutes and said he looks forward to when the CCC is open. He sees one especially big advantage to it.

"Getting to a place like a coworking office where there's a lot of other techies and computer programmers, (it) might be helpful as far as networking and getting help with technical problems," he said.

Russell says the CCC should be ready to open on October 1st. If it's as successful as if hopes it will be, he'd like to help other people throughout the Triangle start their own coworking offices as well.

In his article, “Workplace Democracy – The emergence of a community of independent workers” (http://www.nvestntech.com/docs/coworking_facility.htm), Mark Dowds, the co-founder of http://www.creationstep.com which builds branded independent communities, does an excellent job of describing this well-established trend of coworking facilities, and what accounts for its increased interest and use.
